Lead us to the place where we’ll be safe…

By Frank M. Keele

I feel secure in assuming that you are all familiar with the song “The Prayer” and that you’ve heard Andrea Bocelli along with either Celine Dion or Katherine Mcphee perform the same at some point in time. Well, tonight as I listened to “The Prayer” being performed, I was once again deeply moved by the phrase, “Lead us to the place, Guide us with your grace, To a place where we’ll be safe”. Not that all the lyrics aren’t beautiful and meaningful, because they are, but this particular phrase has come to have special meaning to me because it reminds me of our present situation and that the Lord plans to lead us to “the goodly land” and a place of safety.

In my most recent post, “Mine angels shall go up before you, and also my presence” we learn about the Lord’s intentions to come to His saints while they are still in the Rocky Mountains and lead them back to “the goodly land”. So, it should not surprise us if He comes to conference in preparation for Passover and the following trek back to Missouri.

If this be the case, it would be as if the second coming had already started so far as the saints are concerned… Christ Himself taking up the task of seeing to it that the saints are prepared and protected as they make the trek. And what else might transpire at this time? Well, what about those who are unable to trek for whatever reason? Would they be required to “stand in holy places” for a time as it were? From D&C 101 we read:

22 Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places;

23 And prepare for the revelation which is to come, when the veil of the covering of my temple, in my tabernacle, which hideth the earth, shall be taken off, and all flesh shall see me together.

From the above passage, it is quite apparent that standing “in holy places” is to “prepare for… when… all flesh shall see me together” as the Lord tells us. And in section 45 the Lord says:

31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.

32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.

So we know that we shall have to “stand in holy places” in a day when “a desolating sickness shall cover the land” and other judgments shall go forth. However, in this same section the Lord also tells us:

56 And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins.

57 For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.

58 And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.

59 For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.

So, when the Lord comes to His saints or when the days comes that “the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins” as the Lord says, we will most assuredly be safe, for as it says in verse 59 above, “the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.” However, these circumstances go beyond the saints standing “in holy places” in the various stakes around the globe because this is the gathering to Zion or the New Jerusalem. Some of you may be asking, but how are those who are unable to trek to be gathered to Zion? We go to Mark 13 for a quick answer and read:

24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

So, the Lord will see to it that all the righteous make it to the New Jerusalem, even if He must send His angels to fetch them!

Returning again to section 45, we read more about “a land of peace, a city of refuge” and “a place of sefety for the saints of the Most High God”:

66 And it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God;

67 And the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it, and it shall be called Zion.

68 And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.

69 And there shall be gathered unto it out of every nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another.

70 And it shall be said among the wicked: Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand.

71 And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy.

We note that the Lord coming to His people and the establishment of the New Jerusalem does not mean that all wickedness will come to an abrupt end, for we are told that “the wicked will not come unto it… And it shall be said among the wicked: Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand.” We also note that “every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.”

And so we conclude that conditions in the world at large during this time (seven years) will be such that safety can only be found in Zion, and so it shall be until the Lord makes His appearance at the battle of Armageddon, delivering the Jews and throws down those remaining nations who continue to fight against righteousness…
